New Delhi, April 19: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh reaffirmed the central government’s commitment to providing 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies during a rally in Tamil Nadu on Sunday. This announcement comes after a related bill was previously rejected in the Lok Sabha.
Addressing the crowd, Singh criticized the DMK, Congress, Trinamool Congress, and Communist parties for obstructing the passage of the women’s reservation law in Parliament. He assured attendees in the Vasudevanallur assembly constituency, “I want to assure you, based on the commitment from the government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, that we will provide women their quota as soon as we get the first opportunity in Parliament.”
Singh joined other prominent BJP campaigners to intensify party efforts ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections on April 23. He is leading the NDA’s campaign in southern Tamil Nadu.
Throughout the day, Singh’s schedule was packed; he addressed rallies in the Radhapuram assembly area of Tirunelveli district and Puliyangudi in Tenkasi district, and also conducted a roadshow in Panagudi, located about 400 meters from the main event site.
The NDA campaign has seen participation from major figures such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Union Minister Piyush Goyal, who have recently urged voters to support the coalition’s candidates.
Earlier on Sunday, Home Minister Shah conducted a roadshow in the Erode South area. He stated on the social media platform ‘X’, “The people of Tamil Nadu have resolved to uproot the DMK’s corruption-filled and unsatisfactory politics; they are determined to establish an NDA government in Tamil Nadu.”
Shah emphasized that the people are fully committed to ending the DMK’s corrupt and appeasement-based governance and forming an NDA government. He insisted that the NDA government will ensure the proposed ‘Reorganization Bill’ is passed in Parliament. He accused the DMK and Congress of hindering efforts to enhance political representation in Tamil Nadu.
While addressing a rally in Modakurichi, Shah mentioned that the central government has proposed a 50% increase in the number of assembly seats in the state to ensure proper representation for all communities in line with the growing population. However, he alleged that the DMK and Congress’s “narrow political thinking and self-interest” have stalled this proposal. Shah concluded, “We will not accept this conspiracy. The NDA government is committed to fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Tamil Nadu, and I assure you that the Reorganization Bill will be passed.”
