Mumbai, August 15: Senior Advocate and former Rajya Sabha member Majid Memon has dismissed opposition leader Rahul Gandhi’s remarks regarding Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as a political joke. He emphasized that such comments should not be taken seriously. Memon condemned the attack on Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal and called for Maharashtra’s Home Minister to apologize to Punjab.
Regarding Rahul Gandhi’s statement about Giorgia Meloni, Memon stated, “This is a political joke, akin to cartoons, where humor is exchanged. Rahul Gandhi has done just that. It’s a political jest that should not be taken seriously.”
On the BJP’s reaction, he remarked, “BJP leaders have made similar statements. Accusations and counter-accusations are nothing new. We say something, they respond. I don’t think it holds any significance, nor should it be presented as news.”
Commenting on the attack on Sukhbir Singh Badal at a gurdwara, Memon said, “Attacking any politician in this manner is completely unacceptable. We must condemn it. It is unfortunate that a senior leader from Punjab was not provided adequate security in Maharashtra. Our Chief Minister is also addressing how such an incident occurred and why he was not secured.”
He further described the incident as regrettable and stated that the state’s Home Minister is accountable for such occurrences. An apology from him to Punjab is warranted.
On the topic of “Vande Mataram,” Memon noted that it is a sensitive issue that has persisted for nearly 50 years. He asserted that there is nothing wrong with “Vande Mataram,” as it is not against any religion but rather a tribute to the nation. Imposing it without context is a government error.
Regarding the student protests in Jharkhand, he mentioned that demonstrations are occurring nationwide. The damage to the future of the youth due to paper leaks is substantial, and merely resigning the education minister will not resolve the issue.
