Doha, March 19: Qatar has strongly condemned the Iranian attack targeting the Ras Laffan Industrial City. The nation stated that this act violates United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817. Following the attack, Qatar declared the Iranian military and security attachés, along with their office staff, as ‘persona non grata’ and instructed them to leave the country within 24 hours.
When a country does not accept a foreign diplomat or asks them to leave, they are declared persona non grata.
In an official statement, Qatar described the attack as a blatant violation of its sovereignty and a direct threat to national security and regional stability.
The Foreign Ministry emphasized that Qatar has consistently maintained a policy of distancing itself from the conflict. Despite promises to avoid escalating tensions, Iran continues to target Qatar and its neighboring countries. This irresponsible approach undermines regional security and poses a threat to international peace.
The ministry reiterated that Qatar has repeatedly called for avoiding attacks on Iranian civilian and energy facilities to preserve regional resources and safeguard global peace.
However, Qatar also noted that Iran’s increasingly aggressive policies are pushing the region toward danger and risking the involvement of countries that are not directly part of the crisis.
Qatar further stated that the attack constitutes a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2817. It reiterated its appeal to the UN Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security, take necessary measures to prevent such serious violations, and hold those responsible accountable.
The ministry also reiterated that Qatar reserves the right to respond under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, which guarantees the right to self-defense. It emphasized that the country will not hesitate to take all necessary steps to protect its sovereignty, security, and the safety of its citizens and residents.
This decision was communicated through an official note during a meeting between Protocol Director Ibrahim Yusuf Fakhr and Iranian Ambassador Ali Salehabadi in Qatar.
The ministry stated that this decision came in response to Iran’s repeated targeting and open attacks against Qatar, which violate its sovereignty and security, contravening international law, UN Security Council Resolution 2817, and the principles of good neighborliness.
Reiterating its stance, the ministry affirmed that Qatar has the right to take all necessary measures in accordance with international law to ensure its sovereignty and security.
