Bengaluru, March 23: Industry leaders and global experts expressed concerns over current geopolitical tensions on Monday. They hope that the conflict in the Middle East will not escalate further and will find a resolution soon, as its impact on the economy and ordinary citizens is already being felt.
Speaking at the ‘Indiaspora Forum 2026’ in Bengaluru, former Infosys CEO Kris Gopalakrishnan highlighted that the Indian diaspora has become a significant strength for the country. Despite living abroad, these individuals hold India close to their hearts and contribute to the nation’s development in various ways.
Gopalakrishnan noted that the diaspora not only invests in India but also brings their experiences, knowledge, and innovative ideas back to the country. Additionally, they help advance India’s interests by engaging with their respective governments. He emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has nurtured this diaspora into a formidable force that benefits India.
He raised concerns about the ongoing tensions and war-like situations in West Asia, stating that the effects are not limited to the tech sector; everyday people are also being impacted. He pointed out that small hotels and roadside eateries are struggling due to a shortage of LPG, leading many to revert to traditional fuels like wood. He warned that if this situation persists, inflation could rise due to spikes in oil prices.
Moreover, he mentioned that a significant number of Indians work in the Middle East, and the remittances sent back home are crucial for India. Any disruption in this region could adversely affect the Indian economy and travel.
Regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI), he stressed the need for appropriate regulations for such a powerful technology. While concerns about job losses accompany new technologies, history shows that they also create new opportunities. He noted that the economy has grown significantly over the past 45 years, along with job creation, and he believes the same will happen with AI. However, he urged the need for upskilling, particularly for the 5.5 million employees in the IT sector, emphasizing that those who embrace AI will see increased productivity and income.
Additionally, Indiaspora’s Executive Director Sanjeev Joshipura stated that the organization’s goal is to position the global Indian community as a positive force and connect Indian leaders worldwide. He mentioned that the forum promotes collaboration in business, investment, culture, philanthropy, and various sectors. Discussions are also underway to strengthen the diaspora’s role in achieving the goal of making India a developed nation by 2047.
He highlighted that the major issues at this forum are geopolitics and AI, noting that the rising tensions in the Middle East and Gulf region affect not only India but the entire world and the Indian diaspora.
Furthermore, Indo-American economist and former IMF Deputy Director Gita Gopinath remarked that the current situation makes it unclear how long the war will last and where oil prices will go.
She stated, “I believe this is a very complex time for the world in terms of international cooperation. Multiple changes are happening simultaneously, including geopolitical shifts and wars, the development of AI, the implementation of tariffs, and increased defense spending by several countries. The global debt level is very high, leading to significant changes, and addressing all these issues presents a challenging time for policymakers. If the world works together to solve these problems, it will always be beneficial.”
Gopinath suggested that India should focus on domestic reforms during this challenging time. This includes improving ease of doing business, increasing investment, creating jobs, and addressing issues related to health, education, and pollution. While global cooperation is essential, she emphasized that India must prioritize strengthening its economy.
