Doha, July 28: Qatar has strongly condemned attempts to target Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities with drone strikes. The nation described these attempts as violations of international law.
The Qatari Foreign Ministry stated on the social media platform ‘X’, “Qatar condemns the attacks aimed at oil facilities in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province and Riyadh region, which were launched from Iraqi territory using drones. These attacks are a blatant violation of Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty, pose a threat to its security and stability, and clearly contravene international law, the UN Charter, and the principles of good neighborly relations.”
The ministry affirmed its full support for Saudi Arabia, backing all legitimate measures taken to protect its sovereignty and territory.
Earlier in the day, Saudi Arabia’s Defense Ministry reported that its air defense systems intercepted several drones launched from Iraqi territory, which were attempting to target the country’s oil facilities.
Spokesperson Turki al-Maliki stated in a social media announcement that Saudi air defense forces had destroyed multiple drones in recent hours that were attempting to attack oil facilities in the Eastern Province and Riyadh.
According to a report by Xinhua News Agency, al-Maliki indicated that these attacks originated from Iraqi territory and were executed by Iran-backed militias. He emphasized that Saudi Arabia has the full right to defend its security and resources and reserves the right to respond if necessary.
The Saudi Foreign Ministry also condemned the drone attacks. No group from Iraq has claimed responsibility for these attacks as of yet.
On May 20, a special committee was established in Iraq to work alongside Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This initiative was taken following drone attacks that were reportedly launched from Iraq.
Iraqi spokesperson Saba al-Nu’man announced that the first meeting of the Cabinet for National Security, chaired by Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief Ali al-Zaydi, took place. The meeting ordered that if it is proven that the attacks originated from Iraqi soil, all necessary actions will be taken against those responsible.
