Chandigarh, March 12: Punjab Police has made a significant breakthrough in its fight against organized crime across borders by arresting the long-wanted fugitive Bhuvanesh Chopra, also known as Ashish. This operation was carried out with the assistance of central agencies. According to police reports, Chopra was wanted in connection with the notorious triple murder case in Firozpur and several narcotics trafficking cases. Punjab Police’s DGP Gaurav Yadav announced this operation on the social media platform X on Thursday.
DGP Gaurav Yadav revealed that a Red Notice and Look-Out Circular (LOC) were issued against the accused to monitor his international activities and restrict his movement. Following continuous international coordination, his location was traced to a country in Central Asia. He was subsequently deported from there. As soon as he arrived in India, he was arrested at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Investigative agencies have identified Bhuvanesh Chopra as a key player in a network smuggling drugs from Pakistan into Punjab. He had been facilitating the transportation of drug shipments from Pakistan to Punjab for an extended period and fled abroad to evade the law. Police also stated that Chopra is the main conspirator behind the triple murder that occurred in Firozpur in August 2024, which resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including a young woman. This incident was reportedly linked to an old rivalry between Chopra and one of the victims, Dildeep Singh.
Authorities assert that Chopra’s arrest is part of a broader campaign against criminals operating from abroad who orchestrate criminal activities in India. The recently established Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTCE) played a crucial role in this operation. Officials believe that Chopra’s arrest will significantly disrupt the logistics network for drug trafficking in Firozpur and surrounding border districts, impacting cross-border narcotics smuggling.
Punjab Police has made it clear that efforts to bring fugitives to justice, whether they are hiding in India or abroad, will continue. The police reaffirmed their commitment to aggressively combat organized crime and drug trafficking in the state.
