Punjab Minister Criticizes Government for Targeting Anti-Drug Activists

Punjab Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa condemns the targeting of anti-drug activists amid rising violence in the state.

New Delhi, October 17 (Daily Kiran) : Manjinder Singh Sirsa, a cabinet minister in Delhi, has raised concerns regarding the Punjab government’s treatment of anti-drug activists. He responded to recent incidents, including the murder of a prominent activist, and called for accountability from the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) and the Chief Minister.

Sirsa emphasized the alarming trend in Punjab, where individuals advocating against drug abuse are facing violence and persecution. He stated, “The Ministry of Home Affairs’ notice is crucial because Punjab is the only state where those trying to combat the drug issue are being murdered. Anti-drug activists are being killed, jailed, and facing legal actions.”

He pointed out that while other states may take action against drug traffickers, Punjab uniquely targets those fighting against drug abuse. Sirsa highlighted the recent assassination of activist Parvinder Singh Jhota, whose family has refused to perform his last rites, believing the government is complicit in his death. He demanded that both the DGP and the Chief Minister resign, calling this a significant issue in Punjab.

In addition to discussing the violence against activists, Sirsa attended a meeting focused on combating air pollution in the Delhi-NCR region. He mentioned that innovative solutions were explored to reduce pollution levels, including ways to minimize emissions from crematoriums.

Moreover, he noted advancements in air quality monitoring technology, such as affordable sensors, which can provide precise data on pollution sources. Sirsa believes these innovations can help address the critical issue of air quality in the region.
