Startups Collaborate with Government to Tackle Air Pollution in Delhi-NCR

Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav engages startups to address air pollution in Delhi-NCR through innovative AI solutions.

New Delhi, October 17 (Daily Kiran) : Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav held discussions on Saturday with startups and innovation companies focused on reducing air pollution in the Delhi-NCR region. He emphasized the need to bridge the gap between policymakers and technology innovators.

According to an official statement, Minister Yadav presented specific problem statements and sought solutions covering nine key areas of air pollution management. He engaged with startups on how their technologies could be adapted, scaled, and implemented at the grassroots level.

The minister highlighted that the discussions aimed to complement ongoing measures such as the Graded Response Action Plan, promotion of clean fuels, electric mobility, and strengthening air quality monitoring with source-level technological interventions.

Yadav noted that such engagements could enhance uniformity in policy implementation and increase transparency in governance. He stressed the importance of empowering technology-based enforcement, stating that integrating plant operation data with Online Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (OCEMS) data is essential for identifying irregularities, with AI playing a crucial role.

The minister underscored the importance of citywide air quality monitoring and called for clean vehicles and efficient traffic management. This includes tamper-proof Pollution Under Control (PUC) monitoring and AI-driven predictions of traffic congestion hotspots.

He urged startups to focus on environmentally friendly solutions for the scientific management of crop residue, solid waste, and construction and demolition debris. The need for guidelines on the storage of crop residues, involving the Ministry of Agriculture, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), and the Central Quality Monitoring (CQM), was also discussed. Additionally, he emphasized the need for faster and more efficient road maintenance as a key measure for active dust control.

The main focus of the discussions was on utilizing artificial intelligence, sensors, remote sensing, satellite, drone technologies, and data analytics to advance real-time understanding of air pollution.

The solutions presented by startups included local air quality monitoring, citywide pollution mapping, hotspot identification and forecasting, AI-based source identification, real-time pollution source detection, and traffic congestion management predictions.

Technologies for 24-hour detection of stubble burning and automatic identification of vehicles without valid PUC certificates, as well as older vehicles, were showcased, which could strengthen timely enforcement and intervention.

The minister also addressed measures to tackle the waste and residue-related aspects of air pollution.
