Chandigarh, October 12 (Daily Kiran) : Chandigarh, October 12 — The President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, Paragat Singh, launched a scathing attack on the state government on Monday. He highlighted the difficulties farmers are facing at procurement centers due to heavy rainfall and inadequate arrangements for protecting rice crops.
Singh emphasized that after six months of hard work, significant expenses, and numerous challenges, farmers bring their crops to the markets. However, without the necessary facilities, their produce is at risk of being wasted. He termed this situation a serious failure of the government.
According to Singh, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has failed to provide essential services to farmers in the markets. He pointed out that payments for purchased crops are not being made on time, forcing farmers to struggle for the safety of their produce, timely procurement, and payments.
Criticizing the central government, Singh noted that Punjab’s market procurement system was developed as a robust mechanism for purchasing farmers’ produce and delivering it to the market. However, he claimed that the central government’s policies have undermined this system.
In his statement, Singh accused the Aam Aadmi Party of also working to weaken Punjab’s market system. He alleged that despite claims of strengthening the state procurement system, the AAP government has failed to make adequate arrangements for crop safety, timely purchases, lifting, and storage in the markets.
He called on the government, which opposes central policies, to clarify why prior arrangements were not made to ensure the safety and timely procurement of farmers’ produce. Singh asserted that the state government cannot evade its administrative responsibilities by merely blaming the weather for farmers’ hardships.
