PSL 2026: Fakhar Zamans Two-Match Ban Upheld by Appeals Committee

Mumbai, April 3: The two-match ban on Fakhar Zaman remains in effect in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). A three-member appeals committee has dismissed the appeal filed by the Lahore Qalandars opener against the ban for ball tampering. According to a news report, the committee stated that there was insufficient evidence to overturn the punishment.

Telecom Asia Sport reported on Thursday that this decision was expected, as there was substantial evidence of Fakhar Zaman altering the condition of the ball during a PSL match last week.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) issued a press release stating, “Fakhar Zaman appealed against the match referee’s decision, which suspended him for two PSL matches for violating Article 2.14 of the code of conduct applicable to players and support staff during the Lahore Qalandars vs. Karachi Kings match on Sunday, March 29, at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.”

The report cited the release, “On Thursday, the PSL technical committee held a hearing regarding this appeal, which included Professor Javed Malik, Dr. Mumrez Naqshbandi, and Mr. Syed Ali Naqi. After reviewing all evidence and hearing statements from relevant individuals, the committee rejected the appeal and upheld the two-match ban imposed by match referee Roshan Mahanama.” Article 2.14 pertains to altering the condition of the ball, violating the PSL playing conditions rule 41.3.

The decision stated, “For a first-time Level 3 offense, a minimum one-match ban and a maximum two-match ban is imposed.” According to the code of conduct, any decision made by the PSL technical committee will be considered final and binding on all parties involved.

This incident occurred at the end of the match when the on-field umpires penalized Lahore Qalandars, awarding five runs to the opposing team. The ball was changed before the final over of Karachi Kings’ innings. The allegations against Fakhar Zaman were made by on-field umpires Shahid Saikat and Faisal Khan Afridi, in conjunction with TV umpire Asif Yaqub and fourth umpire Tariq Rashid. Fakhar denied any wrongdoing and chose to contest the allegations during a formal disciplinary hearing, as permitted under the code of conduct.

Match referee Roshan Mahanama presided over the hearing. He reviewed the evidence and provided Fakhar an opportunity to present his case before making a final decision. The hearing also included Lahore Qalandars captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, team director Sameen Rana, and team manager Farooq Anwar. Lahore Qalandars will face Multan Sultans on April 3 at Gaddafi Stadium, followed by a match against Islamabad United at Karachi’s National Bank Stadium on Thursday, April 9.
