Jamtara, August 1: Protests erupted in Jamtara, Jharkhand, led by opposition leader Babulal Marandi, against alleged negligence at the Sadar Hospital that resulted in the death of a mother and her newborn. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organized a vigorous demonstration on Friday, rallying from the hospital to the district collectorate while chanting slogans. During the gathering, leaders criticized the state government and district administration on various issues, including healthcare, recruitment exams, employment, education, infrastructure, law and order, and corruption.
On July 17, following the deaths of a woman named Reena Devi and her newborn, angry locals vandalized the hospital and blocked roads. In response, the hospital administration filed a complaint that led to an FIR against eight named individuals, including BJP district president Sumit Sharan and several unidentified persons. Babulal Marandi condemned this as a tyrannical action by the government.
Addressing the crowd, Marandi alleged that the healthcare system in Jharkhand is in disarray, with the government prioritizing its interests over public concerns. He raised questions about the poor condition of hospitals and the inadequacies of government ambulance services. He accused the government of corruption in the tender process, benefiting close associates. Marandi also highlighted issues of illegal mining and irregularities in the sand, iron, and coal trades.
He stated that despite the state’s rich mineral resources, the public is not reaping the expected benefits. He criticized the government for a lack of transparency in the recruitment exams conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). Former MP Sunil Soren accused the administration of biased actions and urged officials to act impartially. Former minister Randhir Singh questioned the state of healthcare services, alleging that the district administration operates under pressure.
Former MLA and BJP candidate from Jamtara, Sita Soren, labeled the government’s six-and-a-half-year tenure as a failure, raising concerns about health, employment, and education. She claimed that legal actions are being taken against youth who voice their demands.
