Srinagar, August 1: The death toll from the terrorist attack in Kulgam district’s Kelam village has risen to two as of Saturday. Officials reported that another injured laborer from Chhattisgarh succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Srinagar on Saturday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Deepak Raitre (24) and Bopinder (28), both from Chhattisgarh, who worked at a brick kiln in Kelam village.
Authorities stated that Bopinder was transferred late Friday evening from the Government Medical College in Anantnag to the Super Specialty Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Srinagar due to his critical condition. He passed away this morning at SKIMS.
On Friday evening, terrorists shot the two external brick kiln workers at close range, severely injuring them. Both were taken to the Government Medical College Hospital in Anantnag, where Deepak died from his injuries, while Bopinder was referred to SKIMS for better treatment. He also died on Saturday morning.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, along with local political and religious leaders, condemned the attack in strong terms.
Security forces have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to locate the attackers.
This incident comes amid an increase in anti-terror operations in the Kashmir Valley in response to recent acts of violence. On July 22, terrorists killed Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi while he was on duty in Anantnag.
