Thiruvananthapuram, August 1: A heavy rain and strong wind alert has been issued for Kerala. According to the meteorological department, surface winds are expected to reach speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour in Kerala and Lakshadweep on July 31 and August 1, 2026. In light of this, all educational institutions in the hilly areas of Kozhikode district have been declared closed.
The weather department warns of heavy to very heavy rainfall in certain areas of Kerala. Rainfall amounts could range from 7 to 11 centimeters of heavy rain and 12 to 20 centimeters of very heavy rain within 24 hours. On August 2, some areas in Kerala may receive 7 to 11 centimeters of rain, while Lakshadweep is also expected to experience heavy rainfall on July 31 and August 1.
Data from the meteorological department indicates that over 60 mm of rain was recorded in several locations in Kerala between 8:30 AM on July 31 and 5:30 AM on August 1.
In the Pathanamthitta region, Laha recorded 236 mm, Venkurinji 198.5 mm, and Ranni Chethakkal 182.5 mm of rain. In the Ernakulam area, Neriyamangalam saw 171.5 mm and Koothattukulam 114.0 mm. Thiruvananthapuram’s Palode recorded 148.5 mm and Thattathumala 92.0 mm. Additionally, Punalur in Kollam received 119.0 mm, Tenmala 69.0 mm, Ayyankunnu in Kannur 95.0 mm, and Chemberi 88.0 mm.
Kozhikode Collector M.S. Madhavikutty posted on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “A red alert has been issued for the district. Residents, especially those in hilly areas, are advised to exercise caution. Consequently, schools will remain closed on August 1.”
However, PSC exams and university examinations will proceed as scheduled. The announcement also clarified that online classes will not be affected by the closure.
