Preparations for Chhath Puja in Patna Reach Final Stages, Eight Ghats Declared Unsafe

Patna, March 19: Preparations for the grand festival of Chhath Puja are in the final stages. Both the administration and the public are actively engaged in the preparations for this four-day festival. The district administration is making arrangements along the banks of the Ganges for the convenience of devotees.

In the meantime, the Patna district administration has declared eight ghats along the Ganges as dangerous. All necessary measures are being taken to maintain safety and order. The ghats identified as unsafe include LCT Ghat, Rajapur Bridge Ghat, Pehalwan Ghat, Bans Ghat, Shiv Ghat, Didarganj Ghat East, Rikabganj Ghat, and Bundeltoli Ghat.

It is noteworthy that this major festival is celebrated twice a year. While the Chhath in the month of Kartik is widely recognized, the worship of the Sun God occurs twice annually. The festival celebrated during the Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month is known as ‘Chhathi Chhath.’ In 2026, Chhathi Chhath will commence on March 22. The festival will begin with Nahai-Khai on March 22, followed by the devotees observing Kharna on March 23. On the third day, March 24, offerings will be made to the setting sun, and the four-day ritual will conclude with offerings to the rising sun on March 25.

On Thursday, Patna’s District Magistrate, Tyagarajan S. M., inspected various ghats along the Ganges in preparation for Chhath. He instructed officials to deploy magistrates and police officers according to standards, ensure the presence of SDRF and NDRF teams along the river ghats, and maintain river patrols. He also emphasized the need for a medical team to be operational and for monitoring through CCTV cameras and drones.

From March 22 to March 25, a complete ban has been placed on the operation of private boats in the rivers. The District Magistrate has directed all sub-divisional officers, police officers, and block officials to ensure compliance and take strict punitive action against violators. The river ghats in various sub-divisions have been divided into sectors, with eight teams deployed, including two motorboats and divers, along with necessary resources.
