Mumbai, June 21: During a recent episode of “Koffee with Karan,” filmmaker Karan Johar asked actress Preity Zinta about her feelings on being the second choice for the role originally intended for Kareena Kapoor in the film “Kal Ho Naa Ho.” Zinta responded with grace and poise.
She likened the role to a pair of jeans that someone tries on but ultimately does not purchase. “This film was meant to be mine,” she stated. Johar inquired, “Kareena was the first choice for this film. How did you feel about stepping into her shoes?”
In her response, Zinta recalled a previous conversation where she was asked a similar question. She explained, “If you go into a store, try on a pair of jeans that fit you well but decide not to buy them, it doesn’t mean those jeans belong to you. Then someone else comes along, tries them on, and buys them.”
She further shared, “I remember when you called me. I asked if I could hear the script. When I did, my first question was, ‘Why didn’t Kareena want to do this film?’ After that, it became a topic of discussion everywhere that Kareena was the first choice.”
Directed by debutant Nikhil Advani, “Kal Ho Naa Ho” was penned by Karan Johar and Niranjan Iyengar. Produced under the Dharma Productions banner by Yash Johar, the film stars Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Preity Zinta in lead roles, with supporting performances from Jaya Bachchan, Sushma Seth, Reema Lagoo, Lillete Dubey, and Delnaaz Irani.
Set against the backdrop of New York City, the film tells the story of Naina Catherine Kapoor (played by Preity Zinta), who falls in love with her neighbor Aman Mathur (Shah Rukh Khan). However, for a secret reason, Aman tries to pair Naina with his best friend Rohit Patel (Saif Ali Khan).
