Political Turmoil in Odisha Amid Rising Violence

Bhubaneswar, May 12: Political tensions are escalating in Odisha as opposition parties, including the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress, criticize the state government over claims of deteriorating law and order.

During a press conference at the BJD headquarters, the party accused the government of failing to control the increasing incidents of violence. They highlighted several violent events that occurred in the last 24 hours, asserting that the law and order situation in Odisha has completely collapsed, revealing the failures of the Home Department.

Party spokesperson Dr. Lenin Mahanti stated that the government has utterly failed to establish the rule of law in the state. He alleged that the negligence and indifference of the ‘double-engine government’ have led to serious incidents in Dhenkanal, Hinjili, Kanas, Balianta, and Balipatna over the past week.

Mahanti further claimed that the government’s inaction has weakened the police system, with many police stations operating similarly to BJP offices.

Ipsita Sahu, president of the BJD student wing, accused the current government of witnessing five horrifying incidents within just 24 hours. She remarked that such events have never been seen in the history of independent India.

Sahu also noted that the state’s Director General of Police, Y.B. Khurania, has acknowledged that the general public feels unsafe. She charged that the BJP government has completely failed to maintain law and order.

Meanwhile, Congress activists surrounded the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissionerate headquarters on Monday, protesting against the rising violence and crime in the state. They referenced the murder of a Railway Protection Force (RPF) officer by a mob on May 7.

Bhakta Charan Das, president of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee, asserted that Congress will continue its struggle against the increasing crimes in the state. He criticized the government and the Chief Minister for ignoring these serious incidents, while allegations arise that the police are protecting criminals.

Congress also claimed that many offenders are affiliated with the BJP, RSS, and VHP, contributing to the deteriorating situation. The opposition further stated that the law and order situation has become so dire that Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari had to be warned to fulfill his ‘Raj Dharma.’
