Political Tensions Rise Over Jitendra Awhads Controversial Statement

Mumbai, March 17: Political tensions have escalated following remarks made by NCP (SP) legislator Jitendra Awhad regarding Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Maharashtra government minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule responded sharply, suggesting that Awhad’s mental balance occasionally falters.

During a recent assembly discussion, Awhad claimed that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was initially denied a coronation due to his social status. However, as the controversy grew, he later issued an apology.

In a media interaction, Minister Bawankule accused Awhad of engaging in such politics to secure votes in his constituency, which is predominantly comprised of one caste group. He believes Awhad aims to send a message to his voters through these statements. Bawankule emphasized that while Awhad is focused on his constituency, he overlooks the broader interests of Maharashtra. Such rhetoric, he argued, is merely a tactic for vote bank politics. Despite having to apologize multiple times in the assembly, Awhad continues to make provocative statements.

Bawankule praised Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray for his commendable role, particularly in supporting the Freedom of Religion Bill, which reflects the culture and values of the state. He insisted that such issues should not be politicized and that Thackeray’s support is a personal and positive contribution to Maharashtra’s welfare.

He expressed gratitude to Thackeray for endorsing the bill and described it as praiseworthy. Bawankule noted that he expected similar support from Awhad and other opposition parties, but lamented that the political landscape has become so corrupt that they resort to such tactics to safeguard their votes.

Regarding the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Bill, Bawankule stated that similar laws have already been passed in twelve other states. He reiterated that while Article 25 of the Constitution guarantees the right to religious freedom, coercion in religious conversion is unacceptable.

On the recent Rajya Sabha election results in Odisha, Bawankule highlighted that the BJP achieved a significant victory, with eight BJD and three Congress legislators voting in favor. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for initiating ₹50,000 crore worth of development projects in the state, asserting that progress can only occur under the leadership of the Chief Minister and PM Modi.
