New Delhi, May 1: A political controversy has intensified over allegations that Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann attended an assembly session inebriated on Friday. Leaders from various parties have expressed strong reactions, questioning the chief minister’s conduct.
Rajya Sabha member Swati Maliwal made serious accusations, stating that Mann delivered a speech while under the influence of alcohol. She raised concerns about how such behavior is acceptable from someone in a responsible position. Maliwal also claimed that Mann often appears intoxicated at religious sites, such as gurdwaras and temples. She noted that during his tenure as a Lok Sabha member, discussions about his drinking habits were common among his peers.
Maliwal emphasized that Mann’s drinking problem is not a personal issue. As the chief minister of Punjab, a sensitive border state adjacent to Pakistan, his actions could have serious implications. She asserted that important documents are signed while he is intoxicated, benefiting Arvind Kejriwal, who is perceived to be running Punjab as a remote government, treating it like his personal ATM.
She demanded an immediate alcohol test for Mann, claiming that the Speaker has dismissed this request. Maliwal insisted that he should be dismissed from his position.
Meanwhile, BJP national spokesperson R.P. Singh stated that this is not the first time Mann has faced such allegations. He referenced incidents from 2015, 2019, and 2022, where Mann was reportedly seen intoxicated in public settings. Singh also recalled that in 2019, Mann publicly vowed to stop drinking, swearing on his mother.
Congress leader Shama Mohammad echoed similar accusations, asserting that it is well-known that Mann consumes alcohol. She claimed that he has arrived at Parliament under the influence during his time as an MP.
In this context, Shiromani Akali Dal Vice President Parambans Singh Romana remarked that these are not just allegations; videos circulating on social media and TV channels clearly show the chief minister’s condition. He expressed concern over such behavior in a significant and sacred place like the assembly. Romana also mentioned that some legislators have requested the Speaker to conduct alcohol tests for all members.
