Kolkata, August 3: The recent statements made by exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen during her visit to West Bengal have sparked a new political debate in India. Various political parties, including the BJP, Congress, and Muslim organizations, have reacted differently to her comments.
West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya addressed reporters, stating, “The BJP should not comment on every statement made by Taslima Nasreen. Bangladesh is a separate country, and she was once a citizen there. I have no information regarding her current citizenship status.”
He also criticized the CPI(M), saying, “If the CPI(M) had acted on Buddhadeb Bhattacharya’s advice, the current situation in West Bengal—where allegations of Lashkar-e-Taiba and ISI activity have surfaced—would not have arisen.”
Former TMC spokesperson Riju Dutta remarked, “Opposition parties often accuse the BJP of being secular, anti-Islam, and disrespectful to other religions. However, Taslima Nasreen’s visit to West Bengal contradicts these claims.”
Congress MP Tariq Anwar commented, “This is her personal statement and opinion. Whether it’s a madrasa, school, or Sanskrit institution, those managing these institutions strive to educate children.”
Congress MP Mohammad Javed added, “We have many issues in our own country. It would be better to discuss and focus on resolving those first.”
Maulana Sajid Rashidi, President of the All India Imam Association, criticized Nasreen’s controversial remarks about Islam and urged the government not to allow her to stay in India.
Rashidi stated, “Taslima Nasreen is a writer who has always been surrounded by controversy. Due to her comments about Prophet Muhammad and other religious matters, she has had to live outside the country. If she claims that the Yunus government has failed, why doesn’t she return to Bangladesh? She should try to bring about change there. She hasn’t even improved herself.”
