Patna, June 16: In a late-night encounter on Monday in Bihar’s Gaya district, police clashed with criminals involved in a jewelry heist. Two suspects were injured when police returned fire during the confrontation. They sustained gunshot wounds to their legs and were subsequently arrested. Authorities also recovered a portion of the stolen gold from them.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sushil Kumar reported on Tuesday that police received intelligence suggesting that the suspects linked to the Gurua jewelry heist were planning another crime and had gathered at a specific location. Acting on this information, a police team cordoned off the area and initiated action.
According to the SSP, the police surrounded the criminals and warned them to surrender. However, the suspects attempted to flee and opened fire on the police. In response, law enforcement fired back in self-defense. During the encounter, the main suspect, Sujit Chaudhary, and another suspect, Shravan Kumar, were shot in the legs. Both fell to the ground and were arrested.
The injured suspects were taken to Magadh Medical College Hospital for treatment, where they are under tight security. Police recovered 150 grams of stolen gold jewelry from the apprehended criminals, believed to be linked to the Gurua jewelry heist.
Following the encounter, reports indicated that some other suspects managed to escape the scene. Police are actively conducting raids and searching potential hideouts to apprehend them.
It is noteworthy that on May 27, four armed criminals targeted jewelry trader Prabhakar Barnwal in the Gurua police station area, stealing gold jewelry and cash valued at 4 million rupees. Since then, police have been on a continuous mission to locate the offenders.
