Police Clash with Chain Snatching Gang in Ranchi, Three Arrested

Ranchi, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : In a significant operation, Ranchi police clashed with an interstate gang responsible for targeting women and the elderly in chain snatching incidents. The confrontation occurred on Sunday near Chuttu village, along the Ranchi-Ramgarh main road. During the encounter, the gang’s leader, known as Rangila, sustained a gunshot wound to the leg.

According to police reports, the gang had been implicated in a series of chain snatching cases across various police jurisdictions, including Lalpur, Bariyatu, and Doranda. Acting on intelligence, a special team formed under the direction of senior officers learned that gang members were planning to commit a crime in the Chuttu area of Ormanjhi.

As police surrounded the area, the suspects attempted to flee. Rangila was apprehended during the chase, but not before he seized a service pistol from an officer and fired two to three rounds at the pursuing police. Officers returned fire, injuring him in the leg. He was promptly taken to a hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, two accomplices, Aman Yadav and Kartik Yadav, were also captured as they tried to escape.

From the arrested suspects, police recovered more than ten gold chains. Initial inquiries revealed their connections to the notorious ‘Kodha Gang’ from Bihar’s Katihar district. This gang is believed to be involved in numerous chain snatching and robbery incidents across Jharkhand and Bihar, with suspicions extending to various locations, including Dhanbad, Hazaribagh, and Ramgarh. Investigators are also looking into their potential involvement in a recent chain snatching case in the Bariyatu area of Ranchi.

Police records indicate that Rangila has over 18 criminal cases filed against him across different police stations in Jharkhand and Bihar. Authorities are currently verifying his criminal history and the methods employed by the gang.

The gang reportedly conducted reconnaissance in crowded or relatively quiet areas, specifically targeting women and elderly individuals walking alone. They would swiftly approach on motorcycles, snatch gold chains in seconds, and escape at high speed. Police are now working to uncover where the stolen chains are sold and identify any additional members involved in this network.
