New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to participate in a special Pongal event on January 14 at the residence of Union Minister of State L Murugan in Tamil Nadu. The programme will commence at 9:30 AM and will include traditional Pongal rituals.
Pongal is Tamil Nadu’s most significant harvest festival, celebrated to honour the Sun God, nature, cattle, and farmers who contribute to a good harvest. The Prime Minister’s involvement is seen as a mark of respect towards Tamil culture and the farming community.
L Murugan, a prominent leader from Tamil Nadu, has actively promoted the state’s cultural heritage at the national level. The Pongal event at his residence will feature customary harvest-related ceremonies, religious rituals, and cultural activities. These include the traditional cooking of Pongal and offerings to the Sun God.
During the occasion, Prime Minister Modi will extend his greetings to the nation, especially the people of Tamil Nadu. Over the years, he has engaged directly with citizens by participating in various regional festivals, reinforcing the message of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ by uniting diverse Indian cultures.
The four-day Pongal festival consists of Bhogi, Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal, and Kanum Pongal, each having distinct religious, cultural, and agricultural significance. Thai Pongal, the main day, marks the beginning of the Tamil month ‘Thai’ and is considered highly auspicious.
This event comes at a time when the Prime Minister has been actively addressing issues related to farmers and rural communities across the country.
