New Delhi, March 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a webinar themed “Agriculture and Rural Transformation” via video conferencing on Friday. This information was provided by officials from the Prime Minister’s office.
Under this theme, PM Modi is conducting eight different webinar sessions covering four major sectors: agriculture, animal husbandry and dairy, fisheries, and rural livelihoods.
The upcoming webinar will focus on promoting high-value agriculture by highlighting the potential of crops such as cashew, coconut, sandalwood, agarwood, almonds, walnuts, and pine. The statement also mentioned that discussions will include AI-driven digital public infrastructure for agriculture and opportunities provided by the expansion of India.
Additionally, the sessions will address private sector investment and entrepreneurship in the animal husbandry value chain, integrated development of reservoirs and Amrit Sarovars for fisheries, strengthening coastal fisheries value chains, and expanding market access for products created by rural women entrepreneurs through self-help groups (SHGs).
The Union Budget for 2026-27 places special emphasis on high-value agriculture, allied sectors, and technology-driven farming. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed targeted interventions to increase farmers’ income, create rural employment, and modernize agricultural practices.
She announced an allocation of ₹1,62,671 crore for the agriculture sector, which is a 7% increase from the revised estimate of ₹1,51,853 crore for 2025-26.
The ministry’s expenditure has rapidly increased in recent years, rising from approximately ₹21,933.50 crore in 2013-14 to nearly ₹1,51,853 crore in the budget estimates for 2025-26, highlighting the growing financial support for this sector.
The 2026-27 budget aims to promote high-value crops like coconut, sandalwood, cocoa, and cashew in coastal areas to enhance farmers’ income. Additionally, support will be provided for agarwood trees in the northeastern region and for almonds, walnuts, and pine nuts in the country’s hilly areas.
The Finance Minister stated that this proposal is part of a comprehensive roadmap outlined in the budget to achieve the third duty, which requires targeted efforts to increase farmers’ income through productivity growth and entrepreneurship.
Sitharaman noted that nearly 3 crore people depend on coconuts for their livelihood, including about 1 crore farmers. To further enhance competitiveness, a coconut incentive scheme has been announced to increase production and productivity through various measures, including replacing old and unproductive trees with new plants and varieties in major coconut-producing states.
