New Delhi, March 26: The IPL 2026 season is set to kick off on March 28, with Sunrisers Hyderabad facing the reigning champions Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the opening match. Unfortunately, Pat Cummins will miss the initial games due to injury. However, he remains optimistic about participating in the latter half and playoffs of the tournament.
In a conversation on the ‘Business of Sports’ podcast, Cummins shared that he is recovering from a back injury. He stated, “I am still recovering from my back issue, but it’s improving. I have been bowling in the nets and am doing so about every third day. The plan is to be fully fit by the middle of the tournament. If all goes well, I will play in the second half and the finals.”
Cummins expressed confidence in captain Ishan Kishan’s ability to meet expectations. He noted that Ishan had an impressive captaincy record in last year’s domestic tournament, leading Jharkhand to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Ishan’s recent batting form has also been commendable, as he consistently scored runs in the T20 World Cup 2026.
However, without Cummins, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s fast bowling attack appears significantly weakened. Ishan, along with bowlers like Lasith Malinga, Harshal Patel, Jaydev Unadkat, and Shivam Mavi, will bear the responsibility of steering the team forward. Additionally, Hyderabad’s spin department seems to be lacking strength, following a disappointing performance last season.
Under Cummins’ leadership, the team managed to win only 6 out of 14 matches last season, suffering losses in 8 games. The success of Sunrisers Hyderabad will largely depend on the performances of Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, and Ishan Kishan, who struggled to deliver consistently last season, impacting the team’s overall results.
