New Delhi, March 7: Pappu Yadav, the MP from Purnia, has expressed his support for Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, stating that a no-confidence motion against him is unnecessary. He emphasized the significance of the Speaker’s role in the parliamentary system, describing it as both crucial and democratic. According to Yadav, the Speaker represents 1.4 billion people, and this representation should be reflected clearly. He noted that Somnath Chatterjee had once sacrificed his party for the sake of discipline.
Yadav remarked, “Today, our Speaker is doing well, and I hope his representation continues to reflect the entire population of 1.4 billion Indians, and that such a need for a no-confidence motion never arises.”
On February 10, opposition MPs submitted a notice for a no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla under Rule 94(C) to the Lok Sabha Secretary-General. This notice bears the signatures of 118 opposition MPs and was introduced by Congress Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi, invoking Article 94(C) of the Constitution to propose the Speaker’s removal.
The opposition accused the Speaker of conducting proceedings in a biased manner and denying leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, the opportunity to speak. They expressed personal respect for the Speaker but voiced their frustration over the continuous obstruction of legitimate concerns raised by opposition MPs in the Lok Sabha.
To substantiate their claims, the opposition cited several examples in their notice, including an incident on February 2, when Rahul Gandhi was not allowed to complete his address on the motion of thanks for the President’s address.
Additionally, on February 3, eight opposition MPs were arbitrarily suspended for the remainder of the budget session, which the notice claimed was a punishment for exercising their democratic rights. The opposition mentioned further examples in their notice.
