Pakistan Reacts Strongly to Imran Khans Sons UN Appeal

Islamabad, March 26: In a surprising move, Qasim Khan, the son of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), made an appeal at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for his father’s release. This request has sparked outrage among Pakistani officials, who view it as an affront to the nation. They have dismissed Qasim’s remarks as merely a “child’s plea.”

On Thursday, Information Minister Ataullah Tarar accused PTI of undermining the country’s dignity under the guise of political dissent. He labeled the party’s actions as “unacceptable.”

Qasim stated that the treatment of his father violates international human rights agreements and commitments under the GSP+ framework (Generalized Scheme of Preferences). This framework is a special EU trade policy that offers zero tariffs on approximately 66% of tariff lines to vulnerable developing countries in exchange for commitments to sustainable development, human rights, and good governance. His mention of this framework has drawn significant criticism from the government.

Major media outlet Dawn reported that during a press conference on Thursday, Tarar asserted, “While every political party has the right to criticize, the country’s dignity should not be compromised.”

He emphasized, “No political leader is greater than Pakistan,” accusing PTI of failing to prioritize national interests. Tarar expressed that it is unacceptable for opponents to mock the country.

He further noted, “The world is recognizing Pakistan, while a political party within the country is engaged in propaganda.”

The minister reminded the audience that PTI has a history of such actions, claiming that the party previously wrote to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) requesting that Pakistan not be granted a bailout package in 2022.

Referring to Qasim’s speech, Tarar remarked, “This is not a one-time incident—if only he had spoken without holding a paper, but that’s alright; he is just a child. Someone must have written that for him.”
