New Delhi, August 3: Access to an international media outlet has been blocked in Pakistan following recent coverage of events in Pakistan-administered Kashmir (POK). Users in Pakistan have expressed their anger on social media platforms regarding this action.
Many users reported difficulties accessing Al Jazeera and raised concerns about press freedom, internet restrictions, and the public’s right to independent information. Al Jazeera identifies itself as the first independent news channel in the Arab world.
This ban comes amid escalating tensions in POK, where protests and unrest have surged in recent days. Claims of restricted website access have sparked online debates, with users questioning whether this move is linked to Al Jazeera’s reporting on the situation in the region.
The controversy follows criticism of international media coverage of sensitive issues related to Pakistan by local authorities. Officials have previously accused international news organizations of biased reporting, while the outlet has maintained its role as an independent media organization.
Some social media users also claimed that the ban on the international news website was imposed due to dissatisfaction with the channel’s coverage of developments in POK involving parts of Pakistan’s military system.
Meanwhile, unrest continues to escalate in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Reports indicate that over 50 people have died and hundreds have been injured in clashes between protesters and security forces over the past four days. The actual numbers are expected to be much higher.
On Saturday, Sardar Umar Nazir Kashmiri, a member of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), accused security forces of violent actions. He stated that more than 50 of our people have been killed in recent days, with hundreds injured.
In another statement, the JAC noted that protests in the Muzaffarabad area continued late into the night, with demonstrators demanding the protection of their basic rights and the implementation of promises made by local authorities.
These events have also attracted international attention. The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) based in the United States condemned reports of force used against protesters in POK and urged Pakistani authorities to cease such actions, restore communication services, and ensure accountability for any unlawful use of force.
The organization cited local civil society groups, stating that Pakistani security forces allegedly fired upon thousands of peacefully protesting individuals during the demonstrations. Pakistani officials have not confirmed the reported death toll or the allegations.
Concerns regarding the alleged restrictions on international media websites, along with issues of internet access and media coverage during the unrest, have intensified discussions about transparency, press freedom, and the flow of independent information during a time of political instability.
