Islamabad, October 15 (Daily Kiran): Intense fighting broke out late Tuesday night between the Pakistani Army and Afghan Taliban forces along the border in Kurram district of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Both sides have traded accusations of unprovoked attacks, with Islamabad claiming that it inflicted heavy damage on Taliban positions, destroying multiple checkpoints and tanks.

According to a report by Dawn, Pakistan’s state broadcaster PTV News, citing security sources, said the clashes began when Taliban fighters and the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) opened unprovoked fire in the Kurram sector. “The Pakistani Army responded swiftly and with full force,” the report said, adding that the Taliban suffered major losses.
Security officials said several Taliban posts were destroyed, and a tank caught fire after being hit. Taliban fighters reportedly fled their positions following the counterattack. PTV claimed that at Shamsadar Post, a fourth tank was completely destroyed, and a senior TTP commander was killed during the operation.
Earlier in the day, Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Aamna Baloch briefed local ambassadors in Islamabad on recent developments along the border. She reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to defending its national security and territorial integrity amid growing tensions.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed that Pakistan had retaliated against Taliban aggression from Kabul, reporting that 23 Pakistani soldiers and over 200 Taliban fighters were killed in the ongoing border conflict.
Afghanistan, meanwhile, accused Pakistan of conducting airstrikes inside its territory last week and said its latest attack was in retaliation. The Taliban government in Kabul also condemned Islamabad for the alleged killing of seven Afghan civilians near the Barabcha border in Balochistan, claiming they were laborers attempting to cross for work.
Reports from The Balochistan Post and Afghan media outlets in Pashto suggest that border skirmishes have spread from Khost’s Jaji Maidan district to Nangarhar, with Helmand province also preparing for possible clashes. Local sources say the situation along the border remains tense, with both sides reinforcing their positions.
Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had warned just a day earlier that “the atmosphere between the two countries is hostile, and fighting could break out at any time.”
