New Delhi, May 8: Amid ongoing tensions regarding the formation of a new government in Tamil Nadu, senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has made significant remarks about the responsibilities of the Governor when no party or coalition secures a clear majority in the assembly elections. In a post on the social media platform X, he clarified the constitutional duties of the Governor.
He stated that if no political party or coalition achieves a full majority in the assembly elections, it is the Governor’s duty to invite the leader of the largest party in the house to form the government.
Chidambaram wrote on X, “What is the responsibility of the Governor if no political coalition or party secures a full majority in the assembly elections? The leader of the largest party should be invited to form the government based on the number of elected members. This is a political rule and parliamentary tradition.”
He emphasized that the assembly is the appropriate platform where the leader of the relevant party can demonstrate that they have the majority’s support. In this context, he referenced the Supreme Court’s landmark decision from 1994 [1994 (3) SCC 1]. Chidambaram further praised the political parties in Tamil Nadu that have clarified and stressed this rule.
It is noteworthy that no party in Tamil Nadu has achieved a full majority this time. Actor-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilga Vetrikazhagam (TVK), won 108 seats but requires at least 10 more legislators’ support to form a government. Due to the lack of a majority, the Governor has not yet granted Vijay the opportunity to form the government.
Meanwhile, the Congress party has already formally announced its support for Vijay’s TVK in the government formation process.
