New Delhi, March 30: As of March 3, approximately 15.82 crore out of 19.36 crore rural families in India now have access to tap water, which accounts for 81.71 percent of these households. This information was presented in the Rajya Sabha on Monday.
Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti, V. Somanna, provided this data in a written response. He noted that when the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM)—Har Ghar Jal—was launched in August 2019, only 3.23 crore (16.7 percent) rural families had tap water access.
The initiative aims to ensure a regular and long-term supply of safe drinking water through tap connections.
An assessment conducted in 2024 revealed that 98.1 percent of surveyed villages had tap connections, with 87 percent of these households reporting water availability in the past week, indicating significant progress.
The evaluation also found that 84 percent of households received water on time, while 80 percent received a minimum of 55 liters per capita per day (LPCD). Additionally, 76 percent of households showed no bacterial contamination, and 81 percent of supply sources were free from chemical contamination. Overall, 76 percent of domestic tap connections were found to be functional, considering parameters of quantity, quality, and regularity.
The minister stated that several measures have been taken to plan and expedite the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission across the country. These include regular reviews of implementation, capacity building, training, workshops, conferences, webinars for knowledge sharing, and field visits by multidisciplinary teams for technical support.
He added that detailed operational guidelines have been shared with states and union territories to facilitate effective planning and implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission. These guidelines aim to provide safe drinking water to rural households and include directives for gram panchayats and animal welfare committees, as well as special campaign guidelines for supplying water to anganwadi centers, ashramshalas, and schools.
