New Delhi, March 17: The Indian government is focused on safely navigating its vessels through the Strait of Hormuz and providing all possible assistance to its citizens through the embassy. During a press briefing on Tuesday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that efforts are underway to evacuate Indians stranded in crisis-hit Middle Eastern regions. The MEA clarified that the situation is being monitored 24/7.
In a joint press conference involving the Shipping, Petroleum, Information and Broadcasting ministries, details of the government’s efforts were shared.
Shipping Ministry’s Special Secretary Rajesh Kumar Sinha mentioned that the Indian government is in constant contact with countries including Iran, aiming for the safe passage of Indian ships.
Meanwhile, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jayaswal reported that on Monday, 650 Indian citizens, including students, crossed the Iran border into Armenia and Azerbaijan. Additionally, 284 pilgrims have also crossed into Armenia, with 130 of them returning to India. The safety and well-being of Indians in the region remain the government’s top priority.
He added that the ministry’s special control room is operational, providing assistance to Indian citizens and their families. Coordination is ongoing with state governments and union territories.
Furthermore, Asim R. Mahajan, Additional Secretary (Gulf Region) at the MEA, informed that the bodies of two Indians killed in an attack in Sohar, Oman, were handed over to their families in Jaipur on Tuesday. The government has expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased.
According to the ministry, the condition of the injured is being monitored, and there are no reports of any Indian being seriously injured. So far, approximately 44,000 people have returned to India from the Middle East.
