Over 39,000 Consumers Switch from LPG to PNG, 485,000 New Connections Established

New Delhi, April 20: In a significant shift towards alternative fuels, over 39,000 consumers have surrendered their LPG connections in favor of piped natural gas (PNG), the government announced on Sunday.

This transition, facilitated through the MYPNG.in platform, is part of a broader strategy aimed at ensuring long-term energy sustainability and reducing dependence on LPG.

The government stated it is collaborating with states and union territories under the Essential Commodities Act of 1955 and the LPG Control Order of 2000 to monitor supply and prevent hoarding and black market activities.

States have been urged to take proactive roles in ensuring the easy availability of petrol, diesel, and LPG. The central government has reiterated this responsibility through multiple discussions and review meetings.

To strengthen coordination, regular meetings have been held with state officials, including high-level review meetings chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas earlier this April.

During these discussions, states were instructed to issue daily press briefings, counter misinformation spreading on social media, and intensify inspection campaigns in collaboration with oil marketing companies through district administrations.

As part of strict inspection measures, over 2,400 raids were conducted nationwide on April 18 alone to curb LPG hoarding and black marketing.

Public sector oil marketing companies have also increased their oversight, imposing fines on 264 LPG dealerships for violations and suspending 67 others.

Additionally, the government is accelerating the expansion of gas distribution networks in cities to promote the use of PNG.

Since March 2026, more than 485,000 PNG connections have been activated, with over 543,000 new customers registering for connections.

To further encourage this transition, city gas suppliers like Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), Gail Gas, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) are offering various incentives to both domestic and commercial customers.

The central government has linked the supply of additional commercial LPG to the progress made in expanding the PNG network in states, benefiting 22 states and union territories so far through this reform-based approach.

The rapid approval of gas infrastructure in cities is being expedited under a special three-month fast-track framework initiated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

On the supply front, the government has ensured continuous availability of natural gas for key sectors, maintaining a 100% supply for domestic PNG and CNG vehicles. The allocation of gas to fertilizer plants has been increased to cover approximately 95% of their average consumption, while supply to other industrial and commercial sectors has been raised to 80%.
