Imphal, April 20: Daily life in the Imphal Valley of Manipur has been severely disrupted due to a five-day shutdown called in protest against the alleged murder of two minor children by suspected Kuki militants.
The shutdown was initiated by ‘Meira Paibi,’ a powerful women’s organization, along with various civil society organizations (CSOs). It took effect at midnight on Saturday, bringing everyday activities in the Imphal Valley, which includes five to six districts, to a near standstill. Streets in the capital, Imphal, appeared deserted, with only a few vehicles on the roads.
Members of ‘Meira Paibi’ and groups of women protesters were seen blocking roads and halting vehicle movement. Passenger and commercial vehicles were absent, while shops, businesses, and street vendors remained closed, causing widespread disruption.
This movement by ‘Meira Paibi’ and other CSOs seeks justice for the two minors killed in an incident in Bishnupur district on April 7, which has sparked significant public outrage.
Previously, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in response to the Bishnupur incident had stated that they reached an agreement with the state government, which reportedly assured that the demands raised by the JAC would be met.
However, on Saturday, the JAC introduced a new condition, setting a deadline of April 25 for the arrest of those responsible for the murders.
Meanwhile, the United Naga Council (UNC), the apex body of the Naga community in Manipur, has separately called for a three-day complete shutdown in all Naga-majority areas of the state starting at midnight on Sunday. This shutdown is in response to the murder of two Naga citizens, including a retired soldier, in Ukhrul district, allegedly by suspected Kuki militants. In a statement, the UNC expressed that, in light of the “severe attack on their homeland and the brutal murder of two Naga citizens,” it convened an emergency meeting with various organizations in Thamjam of Senapati district on Sunday.
