New Delhi, September 18 (Daily Kiran) : Voting for the Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) elections is scheduled for Friday, September 18, 2026. More than 275,000 students are expected to cast their votes. The results will be announced on September 19.
Voting will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will take place from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by the second phase from 3:00 PM to 7:30 PM.
In preparation for the elections, extensive security measures have been implemented. Over 600 police officers will be deployed on campus. The Delhi Police has decided to equip more than 150 officers with body-worn cameras to monitor activities during the voting process.
An official stated that CCTV cameras and drones will be used to oversee the day’s events. Additionally, female constables will be stationed at women’s colleges to ensure a peaceful voting process through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
This election is particularly significant as it features a fierce competition between the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Congress-supported National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). The Aam Aadmi Party and left-affiliated student organizations will also participate. Results will be declared on Saturday.
For the DUSU president position, ABVP’s Yash Dubas will compete against NSUI’s Vijay Shankar Meena. In total, 25 candidates are vying for the presidency. There are also 20 candidates for the vice president role, 24 for secretary, and 19 for joint secretary.
ABVP’s candidates include Ishu Maurya for vice president, Riya Chhawdi for secretary, and Lakshyraj Singh for joint secretary. NSUI has nominated Veer Chhatraath for vice president, Namrata Chaudhary for secretary, and Gopal Chaudhary for joint secretary.
The 2026 DUSU elections are particularly noteworthy due to recent protests at Jantar Mantar regarding exam discrepancies and the collapse of a PG building in South Delhi’s Satya Niketan. These incidents have highlighted the severe shortage of hostels at the university.
New students admitted to Delhi University colleges or departments this year are also eligible to vote. First-year students without college ID cards can present valid fee receipts and government-issued identification such as Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID, or driving licenses. Second and third-year students must carry valid college identification.
