The Orionid meteor shower peaks tonight as Earth passes through debris from Halley’s comet. Viewers can expect to see up to 20 meteors per hour under ideal conditions.

This celestial event occurs every October and is named after the constellation Orion. The meteors, which travel at speeds of 148,000 mph, are visible without special equipment. The American Meteor Society advises that the best viewing times are after midnight and before dawn.

Observers in the U.S. should find dark areas away from city lights for optimal viewing. However, weather conditions may vary significantly across the country, affecting visibility. Clear skies are anticipated for much of the central and eastern U.S., while the Four Corners region and parts of the West Coast may experience cloud cover.

Caitlin Kaiser, a digital meteorologist, said, “Thicker cloud cover could impact sky-watchers in the Four Corners region.” A nor’easter is also developing off the East Coast, likely bringing clouds and rain to areas from New York City to New England.

For those planning to watch the meteor shower, patience may be necessary as the eyes adjust to darkness. NASA has also provided resources for enthusiasts looking to participate in group viewings.
