Opposition Unites Against Lok Sabha Speaker: Priyanka Chaturvedi Advocates for Fairness

New Delhi, March 9: The opposition is showing a united front against the no-confidence motion brought against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. In a recent conversation, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi stated, “The Speaker’s chair must remain impartial, which is crucial for both the ruling party and the opposition.”

She emphasized that when questions arise about the balance of the chair, it becomes necessary for the opposition to bring a no-confidence motion against the Speaker under parliamentary rules and procedures. This can spark a debate, followed by a vote. According to the rules, discussions will commence. Even if the opposition does not win the vote, they have sent a strong message by questioning the Speaker’s authority.

Regarding the ongoing tensions in the Middle East and oil supply issues, Chaturvedi remarked, “I reject the statements made by former President Trump. It seems he believes that all countries are essentially his colonies. He thinks powerful nations can disregard the national sovereignty and decisions of other countries whenever they wish. Recently, Trump allowed India to purchase oil under certain conditions.”

Speaker Om Birla has decided not to participate in the proceedings of the House until a discussion and decision on the no-confidence motion take place. Opposition parties have continuously accused Birla of not conducting the House proceedings fairly and showing bias towards the ruling party.

However, given the current numbers in the Lok Sabha, this no-confidence motion is largely seen as symbolic, as the likelihood of its passage is extremely low.

According to Congress, a total of 118 MPs have signed the no-confidence motion. Several opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), have supported it. In the notice for the no-confidence motion, opposition MPs alleged that the Speaker has repeatedly denied them the opportunity to raise significant public interest issues in the House.
