Embracing Shivas Values: A Call to Devotees from Swami Chidanand Saraswati

Rishikesh, August 1: Swami Chidanand Saraswati, the president of Parmarth Niketan, welcomed Kanwar pilgrims and urged devotees to adopt the values of Shiva, protect nature, and refrain from substance abuse during their pilgrimage.

In an interview with a news agency, he expressed his admiration for all Shiva devotees who eagerly await this time of year to connect with the divine. “First and foremost, I extend my greetings to everyone from the sacred land of the Char Dham. This month is particularly dear to Lord Shiva. It is a time when you can awaken the essence of Shiva within yourself. The essence of Shiva signifies an inner journey—a transition from noise to peace,” he stated.

He emphasized that just as devotees offer water to Lord Shiva, they should also commit to nurturing the earth, rivers, and nature. “As we carry Ganga water for the abhishek (ritual bathing), let us also move forward with the intention of making this journey one of service, values, and emotions. During this month of Sawan, while chanting ‘Bol Bam,’ we must also pledge to reduce waste,” he added.

Swami Chidanand Saraswati highlighted the importance of cleanliness along the pilgrimage routes. “Wherever Kanwar pilgrims pass, there should be no litter. Cleanliness and devotion cannot coexist with pollution. We must be mindful of our actions, as pollution is a sin. We need to shift from a ‘use and throw’ culture to a ‘use and grow’ mindset. This journey should be undertaken with inner peace, not noise,” he advised.

He encouraged pilgrims to experience the joy of tranquility while chanting “Om Namah Shivaya,” rather than getting caught up in chaos. “If any minor disputes arise, avoid creating a ruckus. Remember, peace is Shiva,” he said.

According to him, cleanliness is where Lord Shiva resides. He urged everyone to make a small effort and commit to not spreading waste. “Avoid plastic waste and do not leave old clothes by the banks of the Ganga. You are here to cleanse your inner self, not to spread physical dirt. As you depart, ensure that your villages and towns remain free from pollution,” he concluded.

Swami Chidanand Saraswati also addressed a common misconception about Lord Shiva. “Shiva does not consume intoxicants. The only substance associated with him is the name of Ram. We must dispel the myth that Shiva indulges in drugs. Instead, let us approach the Ganga with devotion, as this power of devotion will liberate you from life’s burdens,” he urged.

He advised devotees to avoid substance abuse and hatred. “Leave behind intoxication and foster love in your hearts. Break the negative narratives that serve no purpose. Understand the divisions being created today and work to connect hearts. This is the essence of India and Shiva,” he concluded.
