Kolkata, March 3: In light of the upcoming crucial state elections in West Bengal, Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari organized a public gathering in Bhawanipur on Tuesday to celebrate the Dol Utsav festival. This event aligns with his aim to challenge Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Bhawanipur constituency of South Kolkata.
Adhikari celebrated the festival alongside local saints and voters from the area. His participation in the Dol Utsav was warmly welcomed by local residents and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers.
As the MLA from the Nandigram constituency in East Midnapore, Adhikari previously defeated the Chief Minister by a narrow margin of fewer than 2,000 votes in 2021. Subsequently, Mamata Banerjee won a by-election in Bhawanipur, securing her position as Chief Minister for the third consecutive term.
During his interactions with locals in Bhawanipur this morning, Adhikari issued a warning against pseudo-secularism and atheism, while calling for extensive Hindu unity ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
To mount a strong challenge against the Chief Minister in Bhawanipur this time, the BJP has established a ‘war room’ in the constituency, with Adhikari personally overseeing the activities. This ‘war room’ is located at the ground floor of 8/1B Chakraberiya Road (South) in Ward Number 70 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).
It is noteworthy that the Bhawanipur assembly constituency was formed by combining eight wards of the KMC – 63, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 77, and 82. Since the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP has consistently received strong votes from six wards within the Bhawanipur assembly area.
Political analysts believe that by focusing on Bhawanipur, Adhikari has taken a strategic step to limit the Chief Minister’s campaigning opportunities in the region, thereby restricting her movements across the state during the election campaign.
