Bhubaneswar, February 13: A court in Balasore district, Odisha, sentenced a man to death on Friday for murdering his second wife with acid. The convict, identified as Chandan Kumar Rana, resides in the Santaragadia village of the Nilgiri police station area.
Special Public Prosecutor Sulalit Kar revealed that Rana was already married and had tied the knot with Banita Singh, a resident of Bhimpura village in the Sahadevkhunta police station area, without disclosing his previous marriage. He has two children from his first marriage.
On December 19, 2022, Rana married Banita at a temple in Nugao, Balasore district. Shortly after, Banita learned shocking information about Rana’s prior marriage from various sources. Consequently, in January 2023, she filed an FIR at the Sahadevkhunta police station, accusing Rana of deceit for hiding his first marriage.
Following police intervention, both parties agreed, in the presence of family members, to separate and live with their respective parents. Meanwhile, Banita’s family arranged her marriage to another man.
On February 20, 2023, an enraged Rana arrived at Banita’s home with a bottle of acid, threatening her against the marriage. He then threw acid on her, resulting in severe burns.
Banita’s sister and her two children, who were present during the attack, also suffered serious injuries. Local residents rushed them to the district headquarters hospital in Balasore. Due to Banita’s deteriorating condition, doctors referred her to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries on February 26, 2023.
Based on Banita’s dying declaration, witness statements, and other evidence presented in court, Rana was found guilty of this heinous crime and sentenced to death, with the court describing it as an exceptionally rare offense.
