Mumbai, 2 January. The soulful and Sufi voice of renowned singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan has touched hearts across the world. Songs like ‘Tumhe Dil Lagi Bhool Jani Padegi,’ ‘Ni Main Jana Jogi De Naal,’ ‘Sanson Ki Mala Pe Simru,’ and ‘Dil Pardesi Ho Gaya’ are cherished both in India and abroad.

In Japan, he is honoured as the ‘Singing Buddha,’ while in America, he is known as the ‘Voice of Heaven.’ His magical voice left a lasting impression in Hindi cinema as well, especially with a song from the 2000 film ‘Dhadkan’ that continues to depict the deep pain in the father-daughter relationship.

We are referring to the song ‘Dulhe Ka Sehra Suhana Lagta Hai’ from the film ‘Dhadkan,’ sung by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Before recording, he set a condition to hear the lyrics first and decided only if he liked them. The music director duo Nadeem-Shravan, already admirers of Nusrat, wanted him to sing for the film, and he agreed after liking the words.

When recording began, the music and rhythm were ready, and half the song was recorded. But as soon as the line “Main Teri Baahon Ke Jhule Mein Pali Babul” came, Nusrat’s voice choked, and no sound came out. Despite repeated attempts, tears flowed from his eyes, and he could not sing that line properly. This struggle happened nearly 150 times because the words constantly reminded him of his daughters, making it emotionally difficult to sing.

Despite being unwell, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan completed the song after 150 takes. He said that if he could not finish it then, he never would. The song from ‘Dhadkan’ still deeply resonates with listeners, beautifully expressing the pain of separation between a father and daughter through every line and Nusrat’s heartfelt voice.
