Udaipur (Daily Kiran): The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has initiated a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about ‘Digital Arrest’ scams, a new form of cyber fraud where criminals impersonate law enforcement officers to extort money or personal information from unsuspecting citizens.

As India advances towards a digital-first economy, digital payments have become a cornerstone of financial convenience and security. However, NPCI emphasizes that digital safety awareness is equally important to safeguard users against evolving online threats.
What Is a Digital Arrest Scam?
In a ‘digital arrest’ scam, fraudsters pose as police officials or government agents, claiming that the victim or their family is involved in serious crimes such as money laundering, tax evasion, or drug trafficking.
They typically initiate contact via phone calls, later switching to video calls to appear more convincing. By using fake police uniforms, government logos, or realistic backgrounds resembling police stations, scammers create fear and urgency, coercing victims into transferring money or sharing sensitive information under the threat of a fake digital arrest warrant.
How to Identify a ‘Digital Arrest’ Attempt
-
Unexpected Contact from “Officials”: Be cautious if someone unexpectedly claims to represent the police, CBI, income tax, or customs departments. Real authorities do not conduct investigations or demand payments over calls.
-
Fear and Urgency Tactics: Scammers rely on intimidation—often threatening arrests or immediate legal action. They use official-sounding jargon and visuals to appear authentic.
-
Requests for Money or Personal Details: Demands for payments to “clear your name” or to deposit “refundable security” are clear red flags.
How to Stay Safe
-
Pause and Verify: Do not respond in panic. Verify the caller’s identity through official channels or by contacting local authorities directly.
-
Never Share Sensitive Information: Government agencies never ask for payments or personal details over phone or video calls.
-
Report Suspicious Activity: Citizens are urged to report such scams immediately via the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or through the Department of Telecommunications portal https://sancharsaathi.gov.in/sfc/.
NPCI’s campaign aims to empower users with knowledge and caution, ensuring that India’s transition to a digital economy remains secure, trustworthy, and inclusive for all.
