Now Get Your Driving License from Home: No More Queues at the RTO

Driving License
New Delhi:
In a move that brings massive relief to aspiring drivers, the Government of India has digitized the driving license application process, eliminating the need for physical visits to the Regional Transport Office (RTO). From now on, you can apply for your driving license from the comfort of your home, using just your smartphone or laptop. This change is aimed at enhancing transparency, reducing dependency on middlemen, and saving citizens valuable time.

Driving License Made Easy

Gone are the days of standing in long queues, submitting piles of paperwork, or dealing with brokers. The process to get a driving license is now completely online, thanks to the Sarathi portal managed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Applicants can now fill forms, upload documents, pay fees, and book their driving test slots digitally — all without stepping outside.

What is a Driving License?

A driving license is an official document issued by the government that permits an individual to drive on public roads. It also doubles as a valid identity card. Driving without this license is a punishable offense under Indian law and can result in fines and legal consequences. The licensing process begins with a learner’s license and progresses to a permanent license after fulfilling certain conditions.

Who Can Apply?

  • For gearless two-wheelers: Minimum age is 16 years.

  • For geared vehicles and four-wheelers: Applicant must be at least 18 years old.

  • The applicant must be mentally and physically fit and should possess basic knowledge of traffic rules.

Start with a Learning License

The first step towards getting a permanent license is applying for a learning license, valid for six months. This allows the individual to practice driving under supervision. After gaining sufficient experience and confidence, one must apply for a permanent license before the learner’s license expires to avoid repeating the entire process.

Empowering Citizens with Convenience

This new digital initiative ensures greater convenience for citizens while reducing bureaucratic delays and red tape. It aligns perfectly with the government’s broader goal of building a Digital India. Whether you live in a metro city or a small town, getting your driving license has now become faster, safer, and simpler.
