New Delhi, 9 December. In November this year, the cost of home-cooked vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis fell by 13 percent year-on-year due to a decline in vegetable and dal prices.
A report by Crisil Intelligence stated that tomato prices dropped by 17 percent year-on-year due to higher supply, while potato prices fell by 29 percent because of a higher base. However, onion prices surged sharply by 53 percent, driven by an increase in last season’s rabi stock and reduced exports.
The report highlighted that dal prices declined by 17 percent, influenced by increased stocks and heavy imports of Bengal gram, yellow peas, and black chickpeas.
On a monthly basis, the cost of vegetarian thalis rose by 2 percent, whereas non-vegetarian thalis saw a 1 percent decline in November.
Pushan Sharma, Director at Crisil Intelligence, commented, “In the medium term, onion prices are expected to rise due to delayed kharif harvest and lower output. However, potato prices may decline as cold storage stocks enter the market.”
He added, “The firm estimates that a 30 percent import duty on yellow peas will keep dal prices within a limited range in the near future. Unrestricted imports of black chickpeas will also help contain dal prices.”
Sharma further warned that any policy interventions such as increased import duties could put additional pressure on dal prices.
During the festive season, vegetable oil prices increased by 6 percent year-on-year due to higher demand. Additionally, LPG cylinder prices rose by 6 percent annually, restricting the overall fall in thali costs.
Meanwhile, the decline in non-vegetarian thali costs was mainly due to a 12 percent year-on-year drop in broiler prices, which make up 50 percent of the non-vegetarian thali cost.
The average cost of preparing a thali at home is calculated based on input prices prevailing across North, South, East, and West India. Monthly price changes reflect the impact on everyday household expenses.
