Northeastern Monsoon Gains Strength in Tamil Nadu, Low-Pressure Area Expected by October 23

The northeastern monsoon is intensifying in Tamil Nadu, with a low-pressure area predicted to form in the Bay of Bengal by October 23.

Chennai, October 20 (Daily Kiran) : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that the northeastern monsoon is intensifying in Tamil Nadu, with a low-pressure area expected to develop in the southeastern Bay of Bengal and adjacent seas by October 23. This forecast comes amid widespread rainfall across coastal districts, the Cauvery Delta, and the Western Ghats.

On Tuesday, the IMD issued warnings of very heavy rainfall for seven districts in the state, although specific names were not disclosed. Currently, an upper-air circulation is present over the Bay of Thailand and Myanmar, which is anticipated to influence conditions in the northern Andaman Sea by Wednesday morning. This could lead to the formation of a low-pressure area by the end of the week, with the system potentially moving west and northwest.

While this system may evolve into a low-pressure area, its actual strength and further development will be clarified in subsequent updates. It remains uncertain whether this system will develop into a cyclonic storm, with further information expected in later bulletins.

The ongoing northeastern monsoon has already brought significant rainfall to various parts of Tamil Nadu, particularly in coastal and delta regions, as well as in districts adjacent to the Western Ghats. Continuous rainfall was recorded in Chennai on October 17, highlighting the increasing meteorological activity in the state.

The emergence of a new system over the Bay of Bengal represents another shift in weather patterns. However, the precise trajectory, intensity, and potential impact on rainfall in Tamil Nadu remain unclear. Future bulletins are expected to provide more insights, particularly regarding the movement of this system from the northern Andaman Sea towards the central Bay of Bengal and its potential strengthening after October 23.

For now, the IMD indicates that the northeastern monsoon is active, and monitoring the developing system will be crucial. The exact assessment of its impact on rainfall will depend on how this seasonal system evolves in the coming days.
