
Chennai, March 29: The nomination process for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections is set to commence on Monday for the 234-member assembly. Voting will take place on April 23, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4, the same day the results will be announced.
With the announcement of the elections, the model code of conduct is already in effect. Major parties are in the final stages of selecting their candidates, and lists of star campaigners are being prepared. Election strategies are also being finalized.
According to election officials, the nomination filing process will start at 11 AM on March 30 and will continue until April 6. Although the official period is eight days, candidates will effectively have only four working days due to consecutive holidays.
Nominations can only be submitted on March 30 (Monday), April 2 (Wednesday), April 4 (Friday), and April 6 (Monday). No nominations will be accepted on March 31 due to Mahavir Jayanti, on April 1 for bank closing, on April 3 for Good Friday, and on April 5 as it falls on a Sunday.
Candidates must submit their nomination papers to the relevant returning officer within the specified timeframe. The Election Commission has also provided an online facility through the ‘Convenience Portal,’ allowing candidates to complete parts of the nomination process digitally.
Officials have specifically warned that heavy crowds may occur on the final day (April 6). Therefore, candidates are advised to prepare all necessary documents in advance to avoid any last-minute issues or delays.
The scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on April 7, and the last date for withdrawal of candidatures is set for April 9.
