Mumbai, June 24: Noel Tata has announced his resignation as Chairman of Trent, the retail arm of the Tata Group. He has held this position for nearly three decades and is currently the head of Tata Trusts.
Tata made this announcement during the company’s 47th Annual General Meeting. Addressing shareholders, he indicated that this would be his final meeting in the role. As he approaches his 70th birthday in November, Tata’s retirement aligns with the Tata Group’s governance rules, which set the retirement age for non-executive directors at 70.
Noel Tata joined the board of Trent in 1998, following the sale of Lakmé shares by his mother, Simone Tata, who founded the company. He became Trent’s first Managing Director in June 1999 and played a crucial role in shaping the company’s retail strategy.
Under his leadership, Trent underwent significant transformation, evolving from a single Westside store to one of India’s largest retail networks, boasting over 1,200 stores nationwide. The company also expanded its portfolio with fashion chain Judio and supermarket chain Star, both of which have been pivotal to its growth.
In the annual report for fiscal year 2026, Tata described the company’s journey as a continuous process of development. He highlighted the contributions of brands like Judio and Star in strengthening Trent’s position in the retail sector.
Financially, the company has seen substantial growth during his tenure. In fiscal year 2026, Trent’s revenue surged to ₹19,701 crores, reflecting the scale of expansion under Tata’s leadership.
Noel Tata is the half-brother of the late business icon Ratan Tata.
