New Delhi, June 12: Ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino stated that his team does not require any special motivational speeches. He believes that players competing on such a grand stage already know how to prepare and perform.
The U.S. will face Paraguay in their opening match on Friday in Los Angeles. This tournament is co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. It marks the 12th World Cup appearance for the U.S., and the team aims to perform well on home soil.
During a pre-match press conference, Pochettino mentioned that he has already had extensive discussions with the players. He humorously noted that they should not expect an inspiring speech before the match. According to the coach, it is now time for players to prepare themselves mentally and emotionally.
Pochettino emphasized that motivational speeches are effective during training when players are trying to improve their game. However, he stated that no speech can suddenly enhance a player’s performance the day before a match. If a player is not prepared, even the best motivational speech will not change their performance.
The American coach stressed that the key to success lies in confidence and proper preparation. He advised players to take one step at a time and focus on their performance rather than rushing into big expectations. According to him, starting strong in any tournament is not enough; consistent performance throughout the journey and finishing strongly is crucial.
Good news for the U.S. team is that nearly all players are fit. Defender Chris Richards has recovered from an ankle injury and is available for selection. However, Pochettino did not clarify whether he would start in the lineup. Similarly, a final decision on the goalkeeper position has yet to be made.
The U.S. team features several prominent names, including AC Milan star forward Christian Pulisic, Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie, and young player Gio Reyna, who are considered key strengths. Although the U.S. defeated Paraguay 2-1 in a friendly match last year, Pochettino is not taking the opposing team lightly. He described Paraguay as a very aggressive and competitive team. He also praised Paraguay’s coach Gustavo Alfaro, noting that the team has been performing well under his leadership. Pochettino is hopeful that this match will be quite challenging, but he is confident that his team will make a strong start in the World Cup.
