Silchar, August 20: Priyank Kanungo, a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), held a review meeting with district officials in Silchar on Thursday to discuss human rights-related issues. Following the meeting, he noted that the district is performing well in implementing the PM Ayushman scheme and distributing UID cards for persons with disabilities. However, discrepancies were found in the data from the education and social justice departments.
Kanungo stated, “We conducted a review meeting with district officials on human rights issues. We discussed various topics. The district is doing commendable work in implementing the PM Ayushman scheme, achieving 73% coverage in card distribution. Approximately 80% of UID cards for persons with disabilities have also been issued.”
While progress is evident in the implementation of these schemes, certain areas require improvement. He mentioned, “We found discrepancies in the data regarding out-of-school children held by the social justice and education departments. We have issued necessary directives for improvement. Nevertheless, the district is performing well in terms of implementing schemes for the protection of human rights.”
The meeting also prominently addressed the safety of girls and children. Kanungo emphasized, “I have a ‘zero tolerance’ policy regarding the trafficking of girls. In the past year and a half, I have helped rescue over 800 girls. I am not certain how many of them were from Assam, but we act based on verified information. The first 24 hours are crucial in cases of girl trafficking. We have also instructed that there should be no delays in such cases. FIRs must be filed, and investigations should commence immediately.”
Kanungo added, “To reduce all forms of crime such as trafficking, child marriage, and child labor, it is essential for children to attend school, and that is our goal.”
