New Delhi, April 10: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has instructed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to present a time-bound action plan for the removal of accumulated waste at the Ghazipur landfill site and for the effective management of daily waste.
This directive was issued by a bench led by Chairperson Justice Prakash Srivastava and expert member Dr. Afroz Ahmad. The MCD has been given four weeks to verify the facts presented in the court commissioner’s status report.
The case was taken up suo motu, initiated by a media report highlighting environmental issues related to recurring fires and smoke emissions from the Ghazipur landfill site.
In its order, the tribunal emphasized that the MCD must clarify how it plans to remove the existing waste and manage the incoming waste within a specified timeframe.
The next hearing in this matter is scheduled for July 6. The NGT has been monitoring the poor waste management at the Ghazipur landfill site since April 2024, following a significant fire incident that raised health and environmental concerns in nearby areas.
Previously, in March 2025, the NGT appointed an advocate commissioner to investigate discrepancies between reports from the MCD and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The investigation revealed several serious shortcomings, including the landfill’s height exceeding permissible limits, waste spilling into nearby drains due to the absence of boundary walls, and inadequate management of leachate, which is polluting the water flowing into the Yamuna River.
In light of these deficiencies, the green tribunal had earlier directed the MCD to develop a solid and timely plan for waste processing, bio-mining of old waste, and preventing fire incidents.
Following this, in October 2025, the NGT sought information regarding the use of the waste-to-energy plant and the amount of electricity generated, while also ensuring that relevant officials comply with regulations.
