New Zealand Plans to Install Comfort Women Statue Amid Controversy

Beijing, April 27: New Zealand is considering the installation of a ‘Comfort Women’ statue in its largest city, Auckland. This initiative is backed by a South Korean NGO, according to reports from the UK’s ‘The Guardian’ and New Zealand’s ‘1News.’

However, the Japanese embassy in New Zealand has expressed strong opposition to the plan. Japanese Ambassador Sosuke Ozawa stated that the statue could negatively impact Japan-South Korea cooperation and harm Japan-New Zealand relations.

Reports indicate that the South Korean embassy in New Zealand has yet to respond to the situation. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs acknowledged the sensitivity of the statue but emphasized that decisions regarding public monuments are made by local governments and communities.
